Garrett Response to Gizmodo Hacking Article

Garland, Texas (December 30, 2021)—Texas-based Garrett Metal Detectors today issued an official response to an online periodical which recently released an article regarding security products.

On December 21, 2021, the design, technology, and science website Gizmodo published an article by Lucas Ropek entitled “Walk-Through Metal Detectors Can Be Hacked, New Research Finds”. A subtitle added “Garrett Metal Detectors, which are used in schools and government buildings, have security vulnerabilities that can be remotely exploited”.

The response issued by Garrett is that Mr. Ropek used a sensational title to drive interest in his article. While perhaps that is to be expected, the content of the article omits important, relevant information in order to cast doubt on the integrity of checkpoint security installations. Had Garrett been given a reasonable amount of time to respond to Mr. Ropek’s request for information, the Company would have requested to include the following pertinent information:

  1. Garrett’s walk-through metal detectors have been protecting the public since 1984 with no known incidents of hacking.
  2. Fewer than 1% of Garrett’s installed base ofPD 6500iandMZ 6100(Multi Zone) detectors includes a network integration accessory (a Garrett CMA or IC Module), and thus are not susceptible to the reported vulnerability.
  3. Many customers who have purchased these accessories use them for data collection in a manner in which they are not connected to any type of network. These are not vulnerable to hacking.
  4. Those customers who do connect the devices to a network typically employ robust firewall technologies to isolate connected devices from potential hackers.
  5. The WiFi protocols in the wireless versions of the integration accessories use robust data encryption to prevent intrusion into the network.
  6. The only Garrett detectors that have any level of risk of hacking are the ones that both include the network integration accessory and are connected to a user’s unprotected network.
  7. 的漏洞被思科mentioned in the article were addressed by a Garrett software update to the CMA and IC Module accessories before Mr. Ropek’s article was published and the effectiveness of those fixes have been certified by Cisco to be effective.
  8. Garrett’s CMA and IC Module software update is currently available for customers who need it. Please contact Garrett technical support atsecurity@garrrett.comor by calling Garrett at 1 800-234-6151.
  9. The operating systems and software on thePD 6500iandMZ 6100are isolated from the IC Module and can only be updated through physical access to the hardware. Remote firmware updates for thePD 6500iandMZ 6100are not supported.

Garrett PD-6500i Receives ECAC Certification

Garland, Texas (September 24, 2021)-Texas-based Garrett金属探测器宣布托托ay that its PD-6500i model walk-through metal detector has passed third party testing and has been certified to comply with Standard 2 European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) requirements. This performance standard, which was established for airports in the European Union (EU), is now recognized as a highly sought-after indicator of quality and performance for security equipment that has passed rigorous laboratory testing procedures.

“The ECAC certification is a standard similar to that of TSA certification in the US, and it has been adopted by a much wider international security market outside of Europe,” said Aaron Arellano, Senior Product Manager for Garrett. “Achieving this EU certification further validates the technology and sophisticated capabilities of the Garrett PD-6500i walk-through metal detector.”

Garrett’s PD-6500i is a 33-zone security walkthrough that already meets many of the world’s most rigorous certifications, including those of the TSA (US airport standards), STAC (French airport standards), AENA (Spanish airport standards), and CJIAC (Japanese airport standards). The latest ECAC certification was the result of the PD-6500i’s successful completion of the ECAC Common Evaluation Process (CEP), wherein the product demonstrated its consistent, repeatable, and reliable performance against rigorous industry testing procedures.

“We hear from increasing numbers of customers that they trust the ECAC standard, and not only in Europe. Furthermore, the ECAC standard, unlike the NIJ standard, comes with third-party test validation. As a result, security buyers can rest assured that ECAC-certified products perform to the standard. This is not the case with products that claim to be NIJ compliant, as those claims are solely based on the subjective self-certifications of the manufacturers,” said Garrett CEO Steve Novakovich.

Garrett Releases GOLDMASTER 24K Metal Detector

Garrett Releases New Multi Zone Walkthrough Detector

Garland, Texas (July 7, 2021)-Texas-based Garrett金属探测器宣布托托ay that its latest security walk-through metal detector is now available for orders. The new Garrett Multi Zone was designed as a powerful yet affordable security solution for schools and government buildings, as well as large public arenas used for sporting events and concerts. “In designing the new Multi Zone detector, our engineering team has implemented key software upgrades for enhanced detection,” said Aaron Arellano, Senior Product Manager for Garrett. “The Multi Zone includes 20 detection zones, with light bar indicators on both panels, and a one-hour battery backup module to keep the detector fully functional in the event of a power outage.”

Garrett’s Multi Zone walkthrough provides precise location of one or more metal objects simultaneously. Designed to be user-friendly for operators, the Multi Zone includes an Auto-Scan function that automatically selects the optimal operating frequency for environmental noise cancellation. Other helpful features include: an intuitive menu design with clear prompts; a convenient slider bar to quickly adjust the value of a detector setting; and pre-set programs geared to meet the needs of specific security applications, such as special events, mass transit, and loss prevention.

With an optional iC Module, the Garrett Multi Zone can be wired or wirelessly networked for control and monitoring purposes. High intensity LED indicators on the detector—five times brighter than the indicator lights on some machines—are clearly visible, even in direct sunlight. When equipped with optional casters and a backup battery, the Multi Zone is fully portable for deployment without the use of power cables. In addition to such versatility, the unit is protected from tampering by several layers of access control.

Garrett Metal Detectors and White's logo

Garrett Announces Acquisition

Garland, TX, October 16, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Garrett Electronics, a design and manufacturing company specializing in sport and security metal detectors, announced the acquisition of certain assets of White’s Electronics.

White’s, who had been in business since 1950 as a premier manufacturer of metal detection products, announced the suspension of operations on June 18, 2020 in a memo to its dealers. White’s founders, Kenneth and Olive White, built their business the same way Garrett’s founders, Charles and Eleanor Garrett, did, by innovating and committing to producing high quality products in the United States. White’s current principals, Kenneth R. and Mary White, are choosing to fold the White’s legacy in with Garrett Metal Detectors as a way of extending their “Made in the USA” tradition.

Garrett CEO Steve Novakovich commented, “The White family and the Garrett family have had a high level of respect for one another as competitors in the sport market for decades. Now we at Garrett are proud to combine our respective legacies as Garrett continues on as the premier American metal detector company.”

The transaction includes White’s trademarks, intellectual property, tooling, and other assets. It does not include White’s real estate in Oregon or Scotland. Garrett intends to rigorously defend all of White’s trademarks, patents, and other IP wherever infringement may occur.

Novakovich continued, “Garrett recognizes that the White’s brand has a loyal following in the US and around the world. We are pleased to welcome those customers to Garrett, and we hope we can earn your future business.”
